Do you know your cardiovascular age ?

Cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks and strokes, is the leading cause of death among adult Canadians.

In less than 5 minutes you can complete your personalized myhealthcheckup cardiovascular age profile and determine if your heart and arteries are older or younger than you.

You can also learn how to lower your cardiovascular age by
reducing your blood cholesterol, controlling your
blood pressure, or maintaining a cigarette free lifestyle.

Use of the program is free, confidential, and no registration is necessary.

Do you know your cardiovascular age?

In less than 5 minutes you can use the myhealthcheckup program to produce your personalized cardiovascular age profile as recommended by the current Canadian disease prevention guidelines.

Calculating your cardiovascular age determines if your heart and arteries are aging faster than you are and your lifetime risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

You can then make healthy changes to lower your cardiovascular age such as reducing high blood pressure or abnormal cholesterol levels, and quitting smoking. Regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and taking medication as prescribed by your physician are also important.

My Cardiovascular Health on

(current age)

Your cardiovascular age of means you have the same risk of cardiovascular disease as someone years of age.

Knowing your cardiovascular age has been shown to help individuals better control their risk factors.

Click next to review your risk factors and learn what you can do to reduce your overall risk of cardiovascular disease.

The calculations used in the myhealthcheckup cardiovascular age profile
were developed by physicians and statisticians at McGill University.

Your risk of cardiovascular disease (such as heart attacks or strokes) over the next ten years is %.

You have modifiable cardiovascular risk factors:.

You have no modifiable cardiovascular risk factors.

  • Reduce your total cholesterol by 25% (LDL-cholesterol by 35%) and lower your risk to %
  • Increase your physical activity and lower your risk to %
  • Reduce your systolic blood pressure to mmHg and lower your risk to %
  • Quit smoking and lower your risk to %

If you improve all your risk factors, you can lower your risk of cardiovascular disease to % and lower your cardiovascular age to years old.

total cholesterol physical activity blood pressure smoking and
Five major risk factors are considered to be modifiable
as they can be controlled with lifestyle measures or medication.
SMOKING Smoking reduces your life expectancy by about 2 to 5 years. If you stop smoking cigarettes your cardiovascular risk may return to that of a non-smoker after approximately four years.
NOT ENOUGH
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
A sedentary lifestyle has about the same impact on your cardiovascular disease risk as smoking a pack of cigarettes daily. Aerobic exercise (like walking, swimming, cycling) can also lower your total cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, and raise your good (HDL) cholesterol.
BEING
OVERWEIGHT
Maintaining a healthy weight is beneficial not only to prevent cardiovascular disease, but also diabetes. Your body mass index (BMI) is one measure of obesity by comparing your weight to your height. You should aim for a BMI of no more than 25. If you are overweight, losing as little as 10-15 lbs (4-7 kgs) can significantly reduce your risk of diabetes and improve your blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels. Maintaining a healthy weight is beneficial not only to prevent cardiovascular disease, but also diabetes.
HIGH
CHOLESTEROL
Reducing your bad (LDL) cholesterol will reduce your risk of developing cardiovascular disease. The ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol in your blood is one of the best indicators of cardiovascular risk. The lower the ratio, the lower the risk.
HIGH
BLOOD PRESSURE
A blood pressure below 140/90 is recommended for most adults while 150/90 is acceptable for those over age 80. Individuals with diabetes should aim for a blood pressure below 130/80. Increasing your daily physical activity and losing as little as 5-10 lbs (2-5 kgs) can significantly lower elevated blood pressure.
